Below is a list of our most frequently asked questions regarding Pragmeta Networks Wi-Fi HotSpot services.

If the question and answer you're looking for are not listed here, please feel free to contact us.

  1. The login page says "You must use our network to use this service."
This is because the system is not aware of your computer. Make sure your computer is set up to use DHCP to retrieve it's IP and DNS settings.

  2. My password isn't working. What do I do?
If you need to reset your password, please call our Technical Support number at 607-432-2922 to reset and email you a new password. Please be aware that we require all passwords to meet or exceed our password security policies. If possible, go to the online sign-up page and pick a new password that meets the requirements before calling.

  3. Does your Wi-Fi HotSpot service work anywhere?
No. The HotSpot works only within the range of a broadcast point. These broadcast devices have a radius of over 300 meters, though objects in the way can diminish the signal.

  4. Can I share files with other people? Can they see my computer?
No. Network traffic between HotSpot clients is disabled within the networking devices so you cannot directly contact another HotSpot user.

  5. Is your Wi-Fi HotSpot service secure?
Wireless networks in general are less secure than wired. One cannot control who is "listening" to the traffic as easily as with wired networks because the data simply passes through the air. Public HotSpots are less secure because, for compatibility, convenience and control reasons, some typical wireless security procedures cannot be used (such as client/server shared keys). Individual sites and servers may provide additional security (such as SSL encryption), or you may use VPN's to encrypt traffic.

  6. How fast is your Wi-Fi HotSpot service?
Wireless networks, like cable, utilize a shared bandwidth technology. This means that as more people use the service, the slower it will get. Currently, the connection between your machine and the nearest HotSpot is roughly twice as fast as most cable Internet services. The connections between antennae are more than twice as fast as these HotSpots. The connection the antennae use to connect to the Internet is faster still. Extreme range, interference and obstacles can cause the service to degrade.
